Veterinary Officer

The Job: You’ll work on behalf of the British Horseracing Authority, to implement all veterinary aspects of the rules of racing. Whether you’re checking the health of thoroughbred horses or testing for drug abuse, you’ll promote horse welfare and help upkeep the integrity of racing.

The Person: You'll need to be professional, calm under pressure and diplomatic in delicate situations

The Entry Requirements: You’ll need to be a qualified Veterinary Surgeon specialising in equine veterinary care.

Veterinary Technician

The Job: Working for the British Horseracing Authority, the regulatory body that upholds the integrity of racing, you’ll help the Veterinary Officer with pre-race examinations. Whether you’re helping take and seal samples in accordance with all official procedures, keeping records, or ensuring high standards of hygiene control, you’ll be invaluable.

The Person: You should be a methodical, bright person who can follow strictly controlled procedures whilst prioritising work sensibly. You’re dextrous, you’re very good with horses and you also have the temperament to deal courteously but effectively with owners and trainers.

The Entry Requirements: No formal qualifications are required, but you will need to have plenty of experience of working with and handling horses.

Scientist - Research and Development

The Job: This role will see you working in the world-class Horseracing Forensic Laboratory. The Research Department works closely with Operations, developing ground-breaking new techniques for drug detection and confirmatory analysis. You can join undertaking research project work in one of four areas: Method Development, Drug Research, Drug Metabolism and Immunological Methods. In addition, you’ll help integrate new R&D developments into the Operations environment, write reports on your findings and keep right up-to-date with current scientific methods.

The Person: An innovative, creative thinker, you have the enthusiasm and drive to constantly break new ground. What’s more, you’re an organised person who thrives on teamwork and can communicate new ideas clearly.

The Entry Requirements: Degree or equivalent in chemistry or related subject, or experience to an equivalent level, coupled with strong IT literacy skills.

Scientist - Operations

The Job: Working in the world-class Horseracing Forensic Laboratory, you’ll deliver a superlative drug screening service from the Operations Department. Reviewing and interpreting the data you get from the automated analytical equipment will be a major part of your role, after you’ve undergone an initial training period. There could well be opportunities to specialise in certain techniques, and to work on one-off R&D projects that support the Operations Department.
