Ffos Las First Meeting
Britain's newest racecourse, Ffos Las, opened for racing on Thursday 18th June
The meeting was a huge success and provided some top class jumps racing, great facilities, wonderful ladies day glamour and quality service to a jam packed sell out crowd in west Wales, marking the start of a new era in Welsh racing.
On the day Yeats raced into the history books, Plunkett did the same by becoming the first ever winner at Ffos Las.
A sell-out crowd of 10,000 were in attendance to witness the opening of Britain's first turf course in 80 years, established on the site of a former open-cast coal mine.
Successful trainer Evan Williams, who is based at Llancarfan, said: "It's very, very quick and is drying very quickly. It will be a superb track in the middle of the winter."
Proud winning owner Hywel Jones added: "It's a historic moment and, as a Welshman from this part of the world, I'm so proud to win the race for Wales."
There also may have been a sign of things to come in the Castell Howell Novices' Hurdle as the Irish contingent hit the mark with Turf War.
The Michael Hourigan inmate (15-8) travelled nicely for Adrian Heskin, stretching clear after the final flight to beat Cootehill by two and a half lengths.
But the man of the moment was Tony McCoy, who rode a treble and said: "It's a lovely track. The ground is a little bit quicker than they would have liked, but I'm sure they'll fix that. It's very similar to places like Newbury, and there are no faults."
Listen to Ffos Las owner Dai Walters talk about the opening of the course and hint that the course might be hosting some top class racing after its launch
BHA Chief Executive Nic Coward also airs his views on the course's opening and what the future holds.
The Course
Ffos Las will bring top class racing back to West Wales for the first time since 1937. You can find it in the heart of Carmarthenshire between the towns Llanelli and Carmarthen, only 15 minutes from junction 48 of the M4, and only an hours drive from the Irish Ferry terminals of Pembroke Dock and Fishguard.

The setting is magnificent. It is surrounded by rolling hills and countryside and has a view down the Gwendraeth Valley to Carmarthen Bay. It is almost impossible to believe that it is the former site of the largest open cast coalmine in Europe.
The track is going to provide a racing surface to rival any course in the world. It is 60m wide, has the benefit of miles of drainage and has been created level to provide a superb track to race on and a great viewing track for the racegoer.
Ffos Las will stage both Jump and Flat fixtures. It has excellent facilities and infrastructure for the racegoer, including ample free parking, a large stand housing plenty of bars and betting outlets. Above all it will offer a great view of high quality racing in picturesque surroundings.
The racing programme is set to be of a very high quality, and with Wales’ Horse Trainers currently flying high, and Irish Trainers keen to visit the track those who attend are guaranteed a feast of good racing.
