Coral Welsh National
Chepstow
25 August - 27 December 2008
The Coral Welsh National is one of the big attractions in the bumper programme of top-class jump racing over the Christmas holiday period – a gruelling test of stamina over a course described by racing writer/broadcaster John Tyrrel as “not easy but able to bring out the best in the best”.
The course’s severe undulations put the emphasis firmly on stamina, especially if the ground is heavy. Fortunes can change rapidly around the far turn and up the long finishing straight, making the Welsh National one of the most exciting and unpredictable jumps races.
First run at Chepstow in 1949, the 3m5f handicap chase has a proud history – winners include subsequent Grand National heroes Rag Trade (1976) and Corbiere (1982) and the triple National hero Earthsummit (1997) as well as recent Cheltenham Gold Cup victors Cool Ground (1990) and Master Oats (1994).
Chepstow, easily accessible from the major cities of South Wales and from across the Severn estuary, is not only one of the most testing jumps tracks – it is also one of the most picturesque. Another of its attractive features is that racegoers feel close to the action – particularly as the Welsh National runners parade at the start in front of the grandstands.
The Welsh National fixture is Chepstow’s most valuable day – with the Grade 1 Finale Junior Hurdle and the Grade 2 Championship Bumper as the main supporting events.
