Favourite Frankie Moments
18/10/04 The opportunity to win a signed Dettori autobiography illustrated just how popular Frankie Dettori is to so many people in racing.

Favourite Frankie moments flooded in over the email, and unsurprisingly, 40% off the entries highlighted Dettori's Magnificent Seven at Ascot in 1996 as their favourite memory of the great jockey.

If it wasn't the seven winners, then it was his trade mark flying dismount that proved a popular memory for all racing enthusiasts. Many thought the flying dismount demonstrates Dettori's true spirit as a showman and the fact that the big winners mean so much to the jockey.

Dettori's enthusiasm for the sport and sportsmanship were the topic of several entries, with the recent final meeting at Ascot a favourite with many. Having been beaten in the last race, not only did Dettori treat the crowd to his flying dismount, but also went over to the winner Jonny Murtagh and kissed him on the cheek. What a character even in defeat, showing his great sportsmanship in losing in a race he would clearly have loved to have won.

Hearing the news that Dettori's had survived a near death experience when the light aircraft he was travelling in crashed, was also up there with many entrants' fondest memories. The relief that he escaped with only a broken ankle and made a full recovery to resume his racing career was clearly important to many of his fans.

There were also many individual Frankie memories that were precious individual moments. One race fan recalls his excitment as Frankie had won and was entering the winners enclosure, he shouted "Go Frankie" to which Dettori replied "You alright mate?" When seeing Frankie later on in the day he congratulated the great jockey on his win, and Frankie being Frankie, responded by congratulating the race fan on his big mouth!
