Racing Background
  • Mark’s interest in racing was partly a result of his father’s influence, as he was an enthusiastic racehorse owner and follower of the sport.
  • His wife, Deirdre, is his assistant trainer and together they act as an efficient training team.
  • Having attained his licence in 1987, he achieved his first success later that year with Hinety Video at Carlisle.
  • Mark’s favourite horse is Attraction, a super filly who he describes as the best horse he has ever trained. In 2004 she became the first filly to win both the English and Irish 1,000 Guineas.
  • Yavana’s Pace was the most awkward horse to train. The only way he could successfully train him was by exercising him alone each morning at 6.00am!
  • His most accomplished training feats were winning the 2,000 Guineas in 1994 with Mister Baileys, as well as achieving a staggering five wins at the 2003 Royal Ascot meeting. However, Mark maintains that his Guineas triumph is his fondest memory.
  • His major successes have included the 1,000 Guineas in 1994 (Mister Baileys), three Ascot Gold Cups (Double Trigger in 1995, Royal Rebel in 2001 & 2002), the 2,000 Guineas with Attraction in 2004, who also win the Coronation Stakes in the same year, as well as the Dewhurst Stakes, Falmouth Stakes, St James Palace Stakes, Sun Chariot Stakes, Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Dubai Sheema Classic with Fruits of Love in 1999.
  • He trained a fantastic 204 winners in 2009, placing him 3rd in the trainers Championship
  • Two people whom he respects most within racing are Vincent O’Brien and Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum.
  • The motto of Mark Johnston's stable is "Always Trying".

Other Hobbies and Interests
  • When time allows, Mark enjoys cycling and shooting. He tries to take part in three or four shooting days per season.
  • His star-sign is Libra.
  • His favourite singer is Shania Twain, whilst his top film is Notting Hill.
  • Outside the racing world, Mark has strong admiration for Nelson Mandela.
  • A lack of patience is his worst habit - he can’t sit still for more than a couple of minutes!
