The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of TYRRHENIAN, ridden by W. Renwick and trained by Mrs. R. Dobbin, which finished 7th, beaten forty five and a quarter lengths. They interviewed the Rider and Trainer. The Rider stated that his instructions were to sit mid division, get the gelding relaxed and jumping, and to hold on to his head as long as possible on the heavy ground. He added that he found himself to be outpaced after the first half mile and although he was slapping and niggling the gelding along they quickly dropped to the rear of the field. He further added that he continued to ask the gelding for an effort but found he was unable to make any ground on the leaders and had no chance from turning into the home straight, but felt TYRRHENIAN would possibly benefit from a step up in trip. The Trainer confirmed these instructions. Having heard their evidence, viewed a video recording of the race, and having received a report from the Veterinary Officer and observations from the Handicapper, the Stewards noted these explanations and took no further action.

The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner LITTLE PROMISE (IRE) ridden by H. Haynes and trained by J.P.L. Ewart compared with its previous run at Kelso on 6th December where it finished unplaced, beaten approximately thirty six and three quarter lengths, but having received a report of the trainer’s explanation that the gelding had benefitted from a break of 93 days, they decided not to hold an enquiry. The Stewards ordered LITTLE PROMISE (IRE) to be routine tested.

OPEN DE L’ISLE (FR), trained by J.P.L. Ewart, entered the Parade Ring after the signal to mount had been given. The Stewards interviewed the trainer and, not being satisfied with his explanation, fined him £140.00, under Rule (B)27.4.

The Stewards noted that MAGE D’ESTRUVAL (FR), placed fifth, had interfered with OPEN DE L’ISLE (FR), unplaced, who in turn interfered with MR PRICKLE (IRE), unplaced, who in turn interfered with SLIVER SEDGE (IRE), placed fourth, approaching the 6th last fence, but after viewing a video recording of the incident they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved MAGE D’ESTRUVAL (FR’s) placing. They therefore took no further action.

The Stewards considered the apparent improvement in form of the winner JIMMY BOND ridden by R. McGrath and trained by Mrs. K. Walton compared with its previous run at Newcastle on 20th January where it was pulled up, but having received a report of the trainer’s explanation that the gelding had improved from his last run which was after having had a break of eleven months, they decided not to hold an enquiry. The Stewards ordered JIMMY BOND to be routine tested.
