British Horseracing Authority has responsibility for the Racing and Breeding industries’ overall recruitment and training strategy.

Careersinracing.com, which sits as part of britishhorseracing.com, was launched in January 2006 and gives a comprehensive overview of the careers available within the Racing and Breeding industries, as well as offering a free online jobs board for employers and potential employees alike.

A variety of training programmes are developed, co-ordinated and maintained by British Horseracing Authority, ensuring that there is a comprehensive programme of training in place for current and potential employees in the industry. They currently fall into one of five key areas:

  • Stable and Stud Staff Training
  • Jockey Training
  • Training for Potential Racehorse Trainers
  • Racecourse Training
  • Additional Training

Industry Recruitment
The Industry Recruitment and Training Department has established a strategy for the sport which addresses the accessibility and marketing of careers in racing and breeding, opportunities for training and development for stud and stable staff, and the education of employers and staff in supervisory roles.  The racing and breeding industries run and develop many new and continued training initiatives which include:

  • Stable Staff programme run by the British Racing School (BRS) and the Northern Racing College (NRC) which sees hundreds of industry funded recruits complete an apprenticeship and take up jobs in racing yards across the country
  • Equine College Conversion Courses included an element of training with the Northern Racing College and the National Stud, with over 70% of the students going on to take a permanent position in racing or breeding
  • Staff Management Courses are run by the British Racing School for supervisory staff  and for trainers wishing to apply for their licences
  • The British Horseracing Authority Graduate Development Programme sees 17 students take part in an intense graduate scheme, which includes a two-week residential course, followed by a paid eight-week placement with a high profile organisation from the racing and breeding industry.
  • The Overview of British Racing course is a one day programme designed to provide delegates with an introduction to British racing and breeding. The programme is now seen by many areas of the industry as a key element for inducting new employees into their business.

Stable and Stud Staff Steering Group
In 2003, the Stable and Stud Staff Commission, led by Lord Donoughue, was set up to look into the recruitment, training, employment and career development of stable and stud staff and to make recommendations for the future. The commission identified a number of areas where action was required to ensure that the Racing and Breeding industries attract, train and retain sufficient skilled staff to meet their needs, and this led to the formation of The Stable and Stud Staff Steering Group, established in 2004, whose work is to ensure that the areas identified in the commission are implemented.

The British Horseracing Authority Recruitment and Training department work with the Stable and Stud Staff Steering Group to ensure that progress in the training, welfare and recruitment of staff is targeted and continues to benefit the racing industry.

The British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust is the Government-recognised Awarding Body for a range of qualifications in the racing, breeding, equine and farriery industries.
