Children enjoying the racing Children enjoying the racing
The Mission Statement of the horseracing industry’s Education Programme, run by the British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust, is ‘to open the sport to a new, young audience through the use of exciting and informative educational activities based on the National Curriculum through the medium of horseracing.’

Since the inception of the scheme in 2000, the numbers of participating schoolchildren have increased from 1000 to an annual target of over 8000.

The Programme is nationwide and works with children of 4 to 18 years old on a very wide range of curriculum areas from Maths, Literacy, Science, History, Art, French, Design & Technology, Geography and ICT to the new Vocational subjects such as Leisure and Tourism and Business Studies.

The sheer enjoyment that children and students of all ages gain from the programme has been hugely encouraging and the BHEST are enhancing and improving the content all the time to fulfil the requirements of teachers.

A large number of racecourses are now involved and the support of trainers, jockeys and other industry organisations has been immense in allowing other ventures such as stable visits and workshops in schools to work so successfully.
