HBLB Breeders' Prizes 2008
The Breeders’ Prizes Scheme, now in its 16th year, is funded by the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) to
improve the quality of the British Thoroughbred racehorse, via upgrading the quality of breeding stock in Great Britain.
What is an Eligible Horse?
Horses foaled on or after 1st January 2000 must meet the following criteria to be eligible for Flat Breeders’
Prizes and National Hunt First Tier Breeders’ Prizes
- a) must be the progeny of a *British based sire, as determined by the TBA.
- b) i) must have foaled in Great Britain and not left before July 1st of the year following birth, except to
accompany its dam to be covered, provided it returns with its dam by 1st October of that year, or if the dam has died abroad,
returned alone to Great Britain before October 1st of that year. Or
ii) foaled while its dam was visiting a stallion outside Great Britain, provided that it returned with its dam to Great Britain
before October 1st of the year of its birth or, if the dam died abroad, returned alone to Great Britain before October
1st the year of its birth and did not leave Great Britain again before July 1st of the following year.
- c) A horse which is otherwise qualified under a) and b) above shall not be disqualified from the Breeders’ Prize
Scheme if it is exported from Great Britain having been sold in the year of its birth or as a yearling,
under the hammer, by public auction in Great Britain at Tattersalls Ltd., Doncaster Bloodstock Sales Ltd., or Brightwells.

National Hunt Races Breeders' Prizes for Winners in
2008
A Breeders’ Prize is awarded in all Steeplechases in
Classes One, Two, Three and Four, except that in Class 4 eligibility
is restricted to Maiden and Novice Weight-for-Age races only,
all Hurdle races in Class One, Class Two, Three and Four National
Hunt Novice Hurdle races (defined as confined to horses which,
at the start of the current season, have not won a hurdle
race and which, at starting, have not run either in a Flat
race, or more than four Irish National Hunt Flat races); Class
Two, Three and Four National Hunt Maiden Hurdle races (defined
as confined to horses which, at starring, have not won a hurdle
race and which have nor run either in a Flat race, or more
that four Irish National Hunt Flat races); except that in
Class Four eligibility is restricted to Maiden and Novice

Please note that horses that have had their first start in a Flat race are
excluded form the HBLB National Hunt Breeders’ prize
Scheme.
These values are correct at the time of going to press (March
2008) but are subject to changes to the Order and Rules of
Racing.
An Administration fee of £180 will be deducted from
each prize paid. This fee does not apply to Thoroughbred Breeders’
Association members.
