St Leger Stakes History
Milan takes the St Leger in 2001
Milan takes the St Leger in 2001
The St Leger is the oldest classic race, dating back to 1776, making it three years older than the Oaks and four years older than the Derby.

The race was inaugurated by Colonel Anthony St Leger, who went on to become Governor of St Lucia, and was originally run over a distance of two miles. In 1778 the race was run on the Doncaster Town Moor, the site of the modern racecourse and in 1814 the distance was reduced to one mile, six furlongs, 132 yards, and it remains so to this day.

There are too many famous St Leger moments to list, but highlights include the phenomenal Nijinsky and Lester Piggott winning the Triple Crown in 1970, the Queen’s Dunfermline out-battling Alleged – the only time he was ever beaten in his racing career, which included back-to-back wins in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and Oh So Sharp landing the Fillies’ Triple Crown in 1985.

In 2004 the St Leger was won for Godolphin by Rule Of Law, under a beautifully-judged ride from young Australian Kerrin McEvoy.
