Newmarket’s Nat West Rowley Mile course hosts the first two of the five British Classics, the Stan James 2000 and 1000 Guineas. (The other Classics are the Vodafone Derby and Vodafone Oaks at Epsom in June and the St Leger at Doncaster in September).
The 2000 Guineas is where the legendary Nijinsky made his mark under the masterful guidance of Lester Piggott; where the mighty Brigadier Gerard defeated the brilliant Mill Reef; where the Queen's Highclere scored a famous royal victory; where Dancing Brave and Nashwan demolished their rivals and where Rock of Gibraltar landed the spoils for Sir Alex Ferguson and John Magnier in 2002.
The race was won in 2003 by Dermot Weld and Refuse To Bend (Sadler’s Wells). Weld had trained the colt’s half-brother Media Puzzle (Theatrical) to take Australia’s famed Melbourne Cup in 2002.
