THE JUDDMONTE LOCKINGE STAKES
| 2006 winner Peeress (GB) |
Upgraded from Group Two status in 1995, the Lockinge Stakes is the first Group One of the British season for older horses and the only one run at the well-regarded Newbury course. The race is sponsored by Juddmonte Farms, the breeding operation of Britain’s leading owner and breeder of last year, Khalid Abdullah.
Past winners of the race include Habitat (1969), Kris (1980), Polar Falcon (1991) and Lanwades Stud stallion Selkirk (1992). There have been three dual winners: Pall Mall (1958-59), Welsh Pageant (1970-71) and Soviet Line (1995-96).
The Lockinge was won in 2003 by the 2/1 favourite Hawk Wing by 11 lengths. That was judged by many as the best performance of any horse in the world in 2003 and saw him top the International Classifications with a rating of 133.
