First run in 1779, the Oaks is a year older than the Derby.
It was conceived by Edward Stanley (the Earl of Derby) and ‘Gentleman Johnny’ Burgoyne, who had commanded the defeated English troops at Saratoga in the American War of Independence.
The race was named after the house near Epsom where Stanley was living – The Oaks – and the first running went to his own filly Bridget.
Past winners include Pretty Polly (1904), Sun Chariot (1942), Oh So Sharp (1985) and Ramruma (1999).
In 2003 the race was won by Casual Look, trained by first-season handler Andrew Balding, who was born a year after his father, Ian, saddled the great Mill Reef to win the Derby in 1971.
Ouija Board, who took the 2004 running, went on to win that year's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
