28/9/2004 - REAL VALUE AT DONCASTER IN OCTOBER
The Doncaster October Yearling Sales may not be the most fashionable Sale at which to buy but it produces a steady flow of winners each year and revels in its nickname as “the Value for Money October Yearling Sales”.
The 2003 winner of the Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes, MILK IT MICK is a 12,000 guineas graduate of the 2002 Sale whilst 10,000 guineas yearling GOLDEN NUN has flown the flag this year winning five races and £184,426 to date including the Group 3 Kerry Group Ballyogan Stakes and Listed totesport Fillies Stakes.
DBS Yearling Sales are understandably associated with speedy two year olds and this year’s cover horse is SPACE SHUTTLE who has won three races and £37,299 including the Listed Ripon Champion Two Year Old Trophy and been placed on a further five occasions having cost just 7,500 guineas in 2003.
This year’s Sale on 20th to 22nd October again coincides with the Racing Post Trophy meeting at Doncaster when the DBS October Yearling Stakes is run on Day 1. This £30,000 Two Year Old Race is only open to Yearlings sold under the hammer at the Doncaster October Yearling Sales and provides the commercial owner with a chance of a bumper payday, unencumbered by some of the blue bloods who often appear in October Two Year Old races.
The 440 Lots will feature Yearlings by: Agnes World, Bahamian Bounty, Beckett, Bertolini, Black Minnaloushe, Bluebird, Compton Place, Daggers Drawn, Danetime, Dansili, Desert Prince, Diktat, Inchinor, Key of Luck, Lend A Hand, Lujain, Mark of Esteem, Mujahid, Mull of Kintyre, Namid, Orpen, Pivotal, Polish Precedent, Primo Valentino, Royal Applause, Xaar etc.
There are, of course, some well related individuals like Hedsor Stud’s half sister to Group winning sprinter PIVOTAL POINT (a graduate of the Doncaster St. Leger Yearling Sales) who added the Group 2 GNER Diadem Stakes at Ascot on Saturday 25 September to his impressive tally by LUJAIN who can be qualified for Europe’s Richest Two Year Old Race - £200,000 St. Leger Yearling Stakes as she was a late withdrawal from this year’s St. Leger Sales. Lostford Manor Stud will send a half sister to the Temple Stakes winner PERRYSTON VIEW by PRIMO VALENTINO, Wynchnor Park Stud offer a half brother to LORD KINTYRE by sire of the moment PIVOTAL, and Catridge Farm Stud consign a half sister to last year’s £200,000 St. Leger Yearling Stakes winner CAPE FEAR by DANSILI. The £200,000 St. Leger Yearling Stakes was won in 2002 by SOMNUS who has gone on to score twice in Group 1 company – Evelyn Stud will be selling a filly by MUHTARRAM out of a Listed placed winner who is a half sister to the country’s leading sprinter.
The Doncaster October Yearling Sales consistently throws up value for money winners and buyers are not penalised by fashion or location. However, the Sale constantly proves that big race winners needn’t cost the earth – MILK IT MICK, GOLDEN NUN and SPACE SHUTTLE are just three who prove the point.
Catalogues are available online at www.dbsauctions.com and by post on Wednesday 29th September.
