The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of IRISH SYPHONY (IRE), ridden by Conor O’Farrell and trained by Owen Brennan, which appeared to be tenderly handled in rear, but ran on to finish second, beaten 3 1/2 lengths. They interviewed the rider who stated that his instructions were to drop in and to get the mare to settle, as she had run too keenly on her previous run at Wetherby. He added that the different tactics worked well as she settled better and was travelling well until he felt her lose her action coming down the hill on the final bend, just when he had intended to make a forward move. Concerned for her welfare, he considered pulling her up. However, she appeared to recover and he felt able to continue in the race although lugging left-handed in the home straight, whereupon she ran on past beaten runners to finish second. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted his explanation.
