Following the refusal of MALLT (IRE) to leave the stalls, the Stewards held an enquiry. They interviewed Philip McBride, the trainer, and informed him that future similar behaviour may result in the filly being reported to the British Horseracing Authority.

The Stewards noted that ALWAYS EAGER, placed fourth, had interfered with EXCELLENT NEWS (IRE), placed second, on the run to the line, but after viewing a recording of the race they were satisfied that it did not involve a riding offence.

The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Martin Harley, the rider of the winner, CAPTAIN CARDINGTON (IRE), in the home straight. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2, in that he had used his whip with excessive frequency. As the offence warranted a suspension at the lower level, and taking into account that this was the rider’s second such offence within 6 months, the Stewards suspended Harley for 2 days as follows: Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 March 2012.

The Stewards held an enquiry following a report from the Starter that CELTIC CHARLIE (FR), trained by Pat Phelan, had failed a stalls test within 15 to 28 days of the original report from Lingfield on 11 February. This being CELTIC CHARLIE (FR)’s second report within 12 months, the Stewards found the trainer in breach of Schedule (C)5 Part 3.4 and fined him £290.

The Stewards held an enquiry into the running and riding of FORMULATION (IRE), ridden by Tony Kelly and trained by Ferdy Murphy, which appeared to have been tenderly ridden in the back straight, eventually finishing fourth, beaten 32 lengths. They interviewed the rider and the trainer. They also received a report from the Veterinary Officer and observations from the Handicapper. The rider stated that his instructions were to ride the gelding fifth or sixth from the rear, pick the best of the ground, get him jumping and finish as close as possible. He added that FORMULATION (IRE) had blown up down the back straight and when asked for an effort jumping the final hurdle in the back straight the gelding stayed on at one pace to the line and had obtained his best possible placing. The trainer confirmed these instructions but added that although he felt that the gelding had obtained the best possible placing the rider should have had FORMULATION (IRE) in a closer position when turning down the back straight. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race the Stewards noted their explanations.

The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Mr John Willey, the rider of TEALS TOKEN, unplaced, in the home straight. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip when out of contention. As the offence warranted a suspension at the lower level, the Stewards suspended Mr Willey for 5 days as follows: Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14, Saturday 17, Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 March 2012.
