Amateur Riders Permits
As an alternative to riding as a professional jockey, individuals may apply for an Amateur Riders Permit.

Ryan Moore, Tom O’Brien and Richard Johnson are recent examples of leading jockeys who first made their names riding as amateurs.

There are two categories of Amateur Riders' Permits - Categories A and B.

  • Category A permit holders may only ride in races confined to Amateur Riders
  • Category B permit holders may ride in Flat Races confined to Amateur Riders, any Steeplechase or Hurdle Race, except those confined to full professional jockeys, and in all National Hunt Flat Races.
Category A
Before an application may be considered for a new Category A permit, the applicant must first attend a one-day training seminar and one day assessment at either the British Racing School or Northern Racing College.

References from two trainers and a letter confirming the details of the intended first ride from the trainer should also support his application.

A new applicant will also need to undergo a medical examination and meet Medical Standards for fitness to ride, as well as the Assessment of Concussion Protocol.

Category B
Generally, applications for a Category B are made by those who have already held a Category A.

An application for a Category B Permit will only be considered from a person who has satisfactorily completed the five day training course at either the British Racing School or Northern Racing College. Anyone wishing to attend the course must meet the following criteria:

  • Have had at least 15 completed rides under the Rules of Racing in Great Britain, the majority of which must be over obstacles (winners of Point to Point Steeple Chases may count towards this total); or
  • Have had at least 20 completed rides in Point to Point Steeple Chases and/or completed under the Rules of Racing over obstacles.
