SENIOR STEWARD

At a meeting of The Jockey Club at Portman Square on Monday 8th December, Mr Christopher Spence was elected to serve as Senior Steward of The Jockey Club for a period of four years with effect from 1st July 1998, in succession to Sir Thomas Pilkington.

STEWARDS

Mr Robert Waley-Cohen was re-elected as a Steward, and will serve in the newly combined role of Deputy Senior Steward and Finance Steward for three years from 1st January 1998. Mr David Oldrey was re-elected as a Steward of The Jockey Club for one year, and will continue as Chairman of BHB’s Race Planning Committee. Mr Joey Newton was elected as a Steward of The Jockey Club for three years and will have responsibility for racecourse matters.

RHT CHAIRMAN

Christopher Spence will resign as Chairman of Racecourse Holdings Trust, and will be succeeded by Mr Christopher Sporborg from 17th April 1998.

JOCKEY CLUB NOMINEES TO BHB

Mr Christopher Spence has been nominated to succeed Sir Thomas Pilkington as a Director of BHB when his term of office ends on 30th June 1998. Mr Christopher Sporborg will resign as one of The Jockey Club’s nominees to BHB on 31st March 1998 when he will be replaced by The Hon David Sieff. Mr David Oldrey and Brigadier Andrew Parker Bowles will continue to serve as Jockey Club nominees to BHB.

Mr Spence’s and Mr Newton’s biographical details are as follows:

CHRISTOPHER SPENCE

  • Elected to the Jockey Club in 1986.

  • Finance Steward of the Jockey Club, 1991-1994.

  • Director of the British Horseracing Board and Chairman of its Finance Committee, 1993 – June 1994.

  • Appointed to Board of Racecourse Holdings Trust in 1994 and became Chairman in June 1995.

  • Chairman of the Epsom Race Committee.

  • Formerly acted as a Racecourse Steward at Ascot, Epsom, Newmarket and Windsor.

  • Breeds horses at home and currently has two horses in training, Celeric (winner of the Ascot Gold Cup and the Yorkshire Cup in 1997) and Calendula, both with David Morley.

  • A member of The Stock Exchange from 1959-77. Currently Chairman and Chief Executive of English Trust Group PLC, an investment banking company formed in 1977. He is also a director of a number of public companies.

    JOEY NEWTON

  • Elected to the Jockey Club in 1993.

  • Racecourse Steward since 1986, and has acted on Flat and National Hunt panels at Leicester, Newmarket and Aintree.

  • A member of the Point to Point Liaison Committee

  • Has previously been a member of the National Hunt Review Group, the Point to Point Sponsorship Committee and was Chairman of the Point to Point Management Committee.

  • Amateur rider with over 100 point to point winners and more than 40 National Hunt winners, including the Liverpool Foxhunters (twice) and the Horse and Hound Cup at Stratford.

  • Has had horses in training with the late Arthur Stephenson, horse currently in training with Sir Mark Prescott

  • Currently runs the family farming company – Barrydale Limited.

  • Director of Newmarket Racecourse – stands down in December 1997 to be a Jockey Club Steward.

  • Director of the Rank Foundation Limited, Director of Christian Communication Limited, Director of Hillside Studios Limited.
