Training and development

The BHA is integral to the training, developing and retaining of the highly skilled and dedicated people who are at the heart of the racing industry.

Jockey Coaching

The British Horseracing Authority Jockey Coaching Programme (JCP) provides all Apprentice and Conditional Jockeys with the support of a qualified professional Jockey Coach.  The Programme, managed by the British Racing School (BRS) in conjunction with the National Horseracing College (NHC) is designed to provide specialised coaching across a range of subject areas to develop Jockeys as elite athletes.

The coaching is provided by a team of highly trained and qualified Jockey Coaches, all successful former Jockeys, who work closely with their Jockeys to further develop the professional and life skills required to succeed in this highly competitive sport.

Racing Excellence Series

Racing Excellence is the industry accreditation for all race series supported by a qualified Jockey Coach that are run under the Hands and Heels or Training Race conditions.

It has been long recognised that inexperienced jockeys benefit from structured coaching when race riding to improve and develop their skills. With 74 races across 7 series, including both flat and jumps codes, Racing Excellence will provide this valuable opportunity.

Riders Coaching Programme

Following the success of the Jockey Coaching Programme, attention is being turned to developing the skills of racing grooms who are instrumental in preparing horses for their racecourse performance.

The BHA’s Rider Coaching Programme (RCP)is led by the  National Horseracing College (NHC) in Middleham and supported by the Racing Foundation. The programme will train experienced staff to gain a nationally recognised qualification as Level 2 coaches, improving the horsemanship of less experienced team members.

This initiative will provide staff real opportunities to grow and enhance their skills while also providing them with an incentive to remain in the industry and progress in their chosen careers.
