The Disciplinary Committee met on Monday 2nd June to consider the letter of complaint from Channel Four Racing against Mr John Jenyns in his capacity as Chairman of the Stewards at York on 13th May.

Having ascertained what actually happened on that day and assessed the merits of the complaint, the Committee considered whether it should exercise its powers under Rule 10 (iii) concerning Mr Jenyns’ stewarding role at Redcar and Pontefract.

The Committee decided that as a result of what they found to be an error of judgement, acknowledged by Mr Jenyns, it was inappropriate for him to act as a chairman of a panel of Stewards, but he could continue to be a member of the panel at Redcar and Pontefract.

The Disciplinary Committee is prepared to reconsider Mr Jenyns’ position as panel chairman from the beginning of the 1999 Flat racing season if the racecourses at which he acts wish to put forward his name.

Notes for Editors:

1. Rule 10 (iii) gives the Jockey Club power to appoint Stewards of Meetings and Chairmen of Panels.

2. York Racecourse announced on 16th May that Mr Jenyns had resigned from its panel of Stewards.
