Friday 23 August saw over 100 young people from across the country come to Newmarket for the latest Careers In Racing “Explore Racing” day, the largest number ever to attend.

The days, which were launched by Careers In Racing in 2018, aim to highlight the diverse range of career opportunities which racing presents as well as showcasing the sport and industry to new audiences.

Attendees from organisations across the country such as The Urban Equestrian Centre in Leicester, Mudchute Park and Farm in the Isle of Dogs, and Ride High based in Milton Keynes were present, as well as groups from riding schools already involved with Pony Racing, and individuals, parents and guardians of those that have expressed an interest in careers via careersinracing.com.

The day began with a tour of the British Racing School (BRS), a fitness session with BRS instructors and a careers talk which included insights from current students.

The afternoon involved a look behind the scenes of Newmarket’s July Course before an afternoon of racing, where attendees had the chance to explore the idea of a career in the racing industry further.

Adam Harman, Careers Marketing & Recruitment Executive at the BHA, said:

“Our second ‘Explore Racing’ day of the year was our biggest yet, with those who attended really engaging with the day and understanding more about how many different careers racing can offer.

“The days aim to be a pathway for those that could have had their interest sparked in racing in many different ways – a Racing to School day, or Pony Racing for example.  They provide ongoing opportunities to experience racing and we can be on hand to support people on their career journey, by helping them on their step which could be work experience in a racing yard or studying for a racing qualification.”

Katie, who attended the day with Mudchute Park and Farm, said:

“It was an amazing day and a brilliant insight into a career in the racing industry. I really liked the diverse range of jobs available in the industry which combines my passion of animals and sports.”
