The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2018 British Horseracing Graduate Development Programme.

The programme, which is designed to aid the graduates’ professional development as well as providing the opportunity to build professional relationships, has provided valuable training and development to over 400 alumni since its inception 27 years ago.

The 10-week programme begins with a two-week residential course in Newmarket during July, where graduates take part in field trips to locations which have previously included the Newmarket Equine Hospital and Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud.

There are also presentations from leading figures within the Racing Industry featuring insights into the structure and workings of the sport.

Graduates then begin an eight-week paid placement with one of the wide variety of sponsors within the industry.

In 2017, placement opportunities included roles at the BHA, Great British Racing (GBR), the Racecourse Association, Racing Post, Timeform, and Weatherbys, as well as a variety of posts at Jockey Club Racecourses and Arena Racing Company.

Eleanor Palmer, a graduate of the 2017 programme, said:

“I was on the 2017 Graduate Programme with a placement at GBR.

“I had a fantastic time and gained invaluable experience. The team were welcoming, friendly and always happy to help or advise. I was given responsibilities on a number of projects helping me develop a number of skills and grow my confidence.

“I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without the programme and can’t imagine a more perfect first step out of university. It allowed me to move towards marketing from a mostly equine and science background and I have not looked back.

“It made me even more keen to work within the racing industry and would recommend it to anyone.”

Zoe Elliott, Careers Marketing and Recruitment Manager for the BHA, said:

“The British Horseracing Graduate Development Programme provides graduates from any background a unique overview of the entire British Racing industry.

“The two-week residential course in Newmarket offers a good basis for the graduates to learn about the different facets of the industry and forge relationships with industry personnel, and the eight-week placement enables them to further develop those skills and relationships in a workplace environment.

“I would urge anyone considering applying for the programme to do so – it is a great way to begin a career in the racing industry and has proved to be an invaluable source of talent to the sport and its supporting industry.”
