BHA ANNOUNCES DETAILS OF NEW TRAINEE STIPENDIARY STEWARD SCHEME

01 Feb 2013 Pre-2014 Releases

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has today announced details of a new Stipendiary Steward Training scheme, initially giving two candidates the opportunity to begin their careers in Racing. The scheme will consist of a one-year placement where applicants will be trained on all areas of the Stipendiary Steward role as well as gaining an appreciation of the wider work of the BHA.

Based both on the racecourse and at BHA Head Office in London, the Trainee Stewards will assist the Stipendiary Stewards and in doing so help to play a role in the regulation and operation of the Raceday. Additionally they will spend time assisting the Handicapping team to understand form patterns and how to allocate official ratings.

The Trainee Stewards scheme is aimed at graduate level individuals and following the one-year placement there will be the potential opportunity of a permanent role, most likely within the Raceday Operations and Regulation department.

Speaking about the new scheme, Paul Bittar, Chief Executive of the BHA said:

“The scheme is not only an excellent opportunity for individuals who want to gain first hand experience of working in the field of Racing regulation, but also for the BHA to recruit from a wide range of potential candidates and to bring talented graduates into the organisation. Stipendiary Stewards have a hugely important role in Racing and are at the forefront of the BHA’s regulation of the sport.

“Similar schemes are in operation in other Racing jurisdictions and have proved a successful platform in which to recruit and train the Stewards of the future. “
