JC Statement On Governance / Regulation of British Racing

Published: Monday 23 Jan 2006

JOCKEY CLUB STATEMENT Jockey Club spokesman Paul Struthers said: “The Jockey Club is represented on the Governing Structure Group which is in the early stages of consideration of Lord Donoughue’s recommendations. The Jockey Club sees no major problem in principle in combining governance and regulation provided the integrity of racing is preserved through maintaining the independence of regulation and the certainty of its funding. “There are a number of practical problems to resolve, for example the pension fund deficit and this will all take time to resolve. In the meantime, as we announced in December after more than a year of detailed planning and preparation, the Jockey Club is on course to transfer its regulatory role to the independent Horseracing Regulatory Authority (HRA) as from 3rd April 2006 with Peter Webbon as its first Chief Executive.” 23rd January 2006
