OFF-SHORE BETTING: BHB ‘WILLING TO TALK’ TO GOVERNMENT AND BOOKMAKERS

13 Jul 1999 Pre-2014 Releases

Following a Board meeting today, the BHB issued the following statement:
“The Board today discussed off-shore betting in some detail and shares the concern about its potential impact on the Levy. The BHB recognises the importance of international comparisons and is therefore convinced that the level of deductions from punters should be reduced.
“There are a number of ways by which this can be achieved and the BHB is willing to sit down with the betting industry and Government, when Government is ready, in order to discuss the division and allocation of betting turnover between the various parties.
“Until those discussions have taken place it would be premature to support one particular solution over others. However, the BHB wishes to make it clear that it does not rule out any solution at this time.”
