Following a presentation at today’s BHB Board meeting by Lord Donoughue, Chairman of the Stable and Stud Staff Commission, whose report had been published earlier in the day, BHB Chairman Peter Savill said:
“The Board is very grateful to Lord Donoughue and all the members of the Commission for the considerable time and effort they have committed and for producing such a wide-ranging report.
“The Commission has identified a number of areas where action is required to ensure that the Racing and Breeding industries attract, train and retain sufficient skilled staff to meet their needs.
“The Board is supportive of the broad conclusions of the Commission and has today approved the Commission’s important recommendation that a small Working Group of industry and independent representatives be established immediately to consider and, as appropriate, implement its recommendations.”
1. The Commission was set up by BHB in July 2003 under the Chairmanship of Lord Donoughue to look into the recruitment, training, employment and career development of stable and stud staff and make recommendations for the future.
2. In addition to Lord Donoughue, the Commission members were Ian Barlow, Senior Partner London Office KPMG; Alan Byrne, a consultant to Godolphin and a Director of Tote Ireland; John Fairley, Chairman of Highflyer Productions and Executive Producer of Channel 4 Racing; Clara Freeman, Chairman of Opportunity Now and previously Human Resources Director of Marks & Spencer; and Will Wyatt, Chairman of Human Capital Ltd and a Director of the Vitec Group. Fiona Birt-Llewellin, BHB’s Recruitment and Training Director, acted as Secretary to the Commission.
