Steward (East Midlands)

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an individual to join our Stewarding team as a Steward, either at Trainee level or for those with more experience within a Stewarding role. You will be a voting member of the Raceday panel, sitting on enquiries and working with the Chief Steward, Stewards’ Panel Chair, Assistant Stewards, Raceday Assistants and the other BHA Raceday Teams, ensuring the race meeting is run in accordance with the BHA Rules and Instructions. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic team player able to work in confidential and sensitive situations. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential along with effective interpersonal skills and the ability to show initiative and be decisive in a time pressured environment. An active interest in horses and horse racing is essential, with the ability to race read.

Stewards’ Panel Chair

We currently have a number of voluntary opportunities for Stewards’ Panel Chairs to join our Stewarding team in the Yorkshire, East Midlands, and East Anglia regions. As the Stewards’ Panel Chair you will work closely with the Chief Steward and the rest of the Raceday team ensuring that race meetings are run in accordance with the BHA Rules and Instructions. You will be responsible for upholding the values of the British Horseracing Authority and the companies code of conduct at all times, whilst acting as a voting member of the raceday panel by chairing inquiries. A competency-based training programme will support the development of successful candidates and dependent on the previous background of each candidate, a period of training will be tailored.

Chief Medical Adviser

The BHA is seeking a Chief Medical Adviser to provide expert strategic, and operational, advice regarding overall medical standards for approximately 1300 professional and amateur riders, including monitoring compliance with those standards. The successful candidate will have proven experience as a GP or specialist, will have previously worked in professional sport, and have experience and training in pre-hospital trauma care. Ideally you will have managed medical teams and major events, but it is essential to have a strong understanding of good clinical governance. Such experience will enable you to oversee the riders’ injury reporting system, advise on clearing riders following injury, occasionally examine riders in a clinical setting, manage protocols such as that relating to concussion, and advise on medical aspects of licence applications.

Regional Development Officer – Retraining of Racehorses (RoR)

Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official equine charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. In order to further develop the RoR regional education and community support programme, RoR are seeking a professional and self-motivated individual who will oversee delivery of RoR activity within the Northern Region. Key responsibilities of the RDOs will be to manage and develop RoR activity in their allocated region, deliver specific educational events, expand the regional RoR community support network, manage the regional budgets and accounts and recruit and manage RoR regional volunteers. This position is part‐time, with a fixed salary based on two days’ work per week.
